Re: Trip reports
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 4:17 PMOver the Memorial Day weekend I went hiking at the Clarno unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, out in eastern Oregon. There are trails you can take into the backcountry there that nobody goes on. So for five hours I was by myself. Found some Indian writing in a cave, a fossilized tree in the side of a canyon and some rare wildflowers. Just one short rain shower. So it was a great day out. -

Re: Trip reports
Mon, July 7, 2008 - 2:31 PMThat trip sounds awesome!
I've been doing some after-dark hikes to the various falls in the Gorge.
Yes, you need to be careful of drop-offs, but there is an enormous power in standing behind a huge crashing falls in the dark, knowing no-one else is around, just listening to the ever-shifting sounds of the water. Since most of the hikes are an easy in-and-out, you can do a whole trip in just a couple of hours before bedtime.
Good flashlight is absolute requirement, and we've heard of some cars being vandalized in the eastern gorge lately, but haven't seen that ourselves... -

Have you ever done this at Oneonta Falls? I think that would be fun in the dark.
